Jim West Jim married his best friend, Liz, on October 17th 1970 at 4:30 p.m. in Pittsburgh, after first competing in the Johnny Appleseed District Quartet Contest in Cleveland Ohio at 10:00 a.m. that morning.

They have two grown children, Tom and Kathy. Both have graduated from Penn State’s main campus and are now on their own. Tom is a Music Educator in Muncy, PA and has informed Liz and Jim that they will be Grandparents (for the first time) this coming October/November. Kathy is making her way in New York City as an up and coming Theater Professional.

Jim first joined SPEBSQSA in 1962. He left in 1972 to help Liz raise the family and complete his education. He is now the Quality Assurance Manager at Superfos Packaging in Cumberland, MD. He rejoined the Society in 1984 and has been very active since then.

Chapter Offices Held:

  • Chapter President — Named Barbershopper of the Year in 1986.
  • Chapter Secretary.

District Offices Held:

  • Area Counselor, Johnny Appleseed District — Named AC of the Year in 1988.
  • District Vice President, Contest and Judging — 3 years.
  • On the staff at AppleCorps, Johnny Appleseed’s Harmony College, for 9 years.
  • Named Johnny Appleseed District “Coach of the Year” in 2000.

International Positions Held:

  • Certified Arrangement Judge from 1991.
  • Certified Music Judge.
  • Certifying as a Presentation Judge.

Competition and Coaching Experience:

  • Sang Baritone in eight different competitive quartets, the latest being the 1999 International Senior Silver Medalist Quartet “The Alumni.” Currently singing Bass in “Fine, Fine, Fine & Dandy” with Jon Bauman.
  • Currently coaching and teaching Basic Craft at the Mid Atlantic Division mini craft schools.
  • Singing with and arranging for the “Chorus of the Potomac” in Cumberland, Maryland.
  • Coaching the fine women’s “Ladybirds” chorus in Cumberland, Maryland.

Other Honors:

  • Because of my work with musical groups of all kinds, I was named an honorary member of the Phi Mu Alpha, Professional Music Fraternity at Penn State University in 1993.

I am very pleased to be working with this fine group of women whose desire to improve their singing is very evident in everything they do.
