Liz West Liz was born in Pittsburgh, PA and grew up in New York, attending boarding schools in the beautiful Hudson Valley. Her father, Harry Comoroda, was a professional musician, playing piano in supper clubs and traveling groups. His family was very musical including brothers Jim on drums, Bill on clarinet, and Clifford on piano and vocals. His sister, Jeannette, studied voice and had an operatic career in New York.

While in school Liz sang in choirs, glee club in High School, studied voice, dance, piano, Gregorian Chant and took some music courses in College, participating in the making of a vocal recording. She graduated from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh in 1972 with a BS in Education, Majoring in English. She continued her interest in music and theater while teaching for two years in Philadelphia and a year in Pittsburgh. She taught a general music course in middle school and formed a choral group to perform excerpts from the Sound of Music.

She and her husband Jim, who were married in 1970, were members of the Pittsburgh Savoyards for fifteen years, performing two Gilbert & Sullivan operettas each year. During those years she was a set designer and painter, costumere, prop person, Board Member and stage sweeper! The group produced a recording of G & S selections.

She and Jim also performed in Amahl and The Night Visitors and various Church Choirs, including St. Therese in Johnstown, PA and currently Sts. Peter & Paul in Cumberland, MD.

During those years she and Jim had two children, Thomas, 28, now in his third year as music teacher at Muncy High School in PA and Katherine, 25, currently living in NY and pursuing a career in the Theater. They’re both Penn State graduates and were involved with a capella singing during their college years.

Liz has been a Barbershop Singers wife and enthusiast since meeting Jim in 1968. He was in a Quartet then and he’s in a Quartet now! Over the years Liz has helped Jim in his various Barbershop offices, judging and teaching positions. She has contributed to show development, costumes, choreography, stage presence and sets.

Although busy raising two children and doing the PTA, Sunday School and other volunteer jobs, Liz found time to join the American Association of University Women in 1979. She held various offices including Co-President in 1984-86. In March of 1989 Liz and her sister-in-law, Laura West produced and performed in a play written by Laura entitled Midnight With Emily Dickinson, in honor of Women’s History Month. Liz will be President of the Frostburg Branch of AAUW for 2001-2003.

After substitute teaching for three years Liz joined the work force full time, eventually as Administrative Assistant to the Chairman of Neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center 1989-94 and Office Manager for a Neurologist in Latrobe, PA until 1998. She was named to Who’s Who of American Women in 1993.

Since moving to Cumberland last July, Liz has joined the Ladybirds as a lead singer. Now there are two Barbershop Harmony singers in the house. Jim sings with the Chorus of the Potomac and the “Fine, Fine, Fine & Dandy” quartet.

Liz’s love of music and theater has been a constant throughout her life and the lives of her family. They say scratch every English teacher and you’ll find a frustrated thespian! When she sings Liz thinks of her Dad (her piano man), Aunt Jeannette (her opera singer), Jim (her best friend and Bari), Tom (her band director soon to be a father), and Kathy (her best girlfriend and always her Star).
