Congressional Performance
The Ladybirds were invited to sing for the public picnic held by LeRoy Myers, Republican delegate to the state of Maryland. The picnic, which featured free food for all attendees, including many governmental delegates and representatives, was held at the Allegany Fair Grounds in their newly-constructed building. The Ladybirds, dressed in white slacks and patriotic shirts, performed at 3:45 p.m. and sang such songs as:
- Hi, Neighbor
- We Sing Our Hearts Out
- This Is The Army
- America The Beautiful
- You’re A Grand Old Flag
- When The Saints
- I Love To Hear That Old Barbershop Sound
- The Star Spangled Banner
Nearly the entire chorus was present for the event, and the sound was fabulous, though environmental noise distracted from the choral performance to some extent.
There were air-jump activities and a balloon man made twisted configurations of balloons for the children. In fact, Shirley Carson and some of the other ladies requested that a balloon shape be made for Ellie Batchelor, the director of the chorus. There was also a jazz combo who entertained after the Ladybirds performance, and live bluegrass music rounded out the day. Photos from the event are available in the Ladybirds Gallery.
