Birds Swoop Down at Betty’s

Posted in Celebrations on Saturday, August 12, 2006

The Ladybirds at Betty Twigg's House The Ladybirds flew into Betty’s house for a picnic and rehearsal on August 3rd. We had been invited there last year, too, so everyone was excited about good food, fun and relaxation. We accepted Betty’s invitation with the understanding that she would not overdo anything in the way of preparation; we brought covered dishes and set everything up for the meal. The food was delicious and plentiful, as usual. No one left hungry, that’s for sure!

Ellie distributed an individual listing of each person’s advertisement sales for the program to the ladies; then she asked everyone to look in the program draft on the page number listed to double check their ads. Any changes were noted and made by Ken on the following drafts. Ellie commended the ladies for their success in selling ads. It is truly gratifying to see that the businesses in the local area support us wholeheartedly! Thanks to everyone!

Carol Harr and Cissy McKenzie Perform Betty was requested to give out numbers to each lady present at the picnic; then she drew a duplicate from her “basket” and the one with the number called was required to perform in any way she desired, be it a song, a dance, a joke, a story, or whatever! The entertainment went swimmingly! The first performer was Carol Harr, who elected to sing baritone to the song, I Love You Truly. She asked Cissy to sing the lead along with her. The two sang a lovely duet and, yes, we could hear Carol! Other ladies sang and acted out various songs — Cissy sang a children’s song about “hinges.” Joan Ralston told a joke about people in church who were asked if they had read a particular chapter of the Bible. Margie Mouse played her nose — her specialty performance. Ellie sang about “flushing toilets on the train.” Jackie sang I’m Still Havin’ Fun — and everyone joined in with her. Nancy recited an original poem. Pat told a story with “tongue in cheek.” Shirley Hoopengarner sang a couple of folk songs. That doesn’t tell of everyone’s performance, but it’s a quick overview anyway. The entertainment went on until everyone had had an opportunity to be a star, though Sandy Daughton admitted she lied when her number was called! She’s shy, but her admission drew a lot of laughter and was entertainment in itself. What a fun evening!

The group was supposed to rehearse during the event and we did sing maybe four or so of the show tunes; basically, though, we just relaxed and enjoyed each other and the good food. Thanks so much to Betty for opening her home to our flock!
