The Ladybirds received an invitation to attend a dinner for volunteers, sponsored by the Heartland Nursing Home in Keyser, West Virginia. The dinner was held at the new Keyser High School in the Commons Area.

There were five people from the Ladybirds, who attended the dinner: Joan Ralston, Betty Twigg, Nancy Cowan, Ellie Batchelor, and Frank Batchelor (Harmony Honey). The dinner, held on April 21st at 5:00 p.m., was very nice. The weather was spectacular, and Frank drove everyone except Nancy, who came separately. Dave was unable to attend with her because of a roofing project at home. The menu consisted of: baked ham, scalloped potatoes, green beans, salad, rolls, butter, and numerous desserts. The food was all home-made and tasted delicious. To mention a few of the desserts—how about cakes of all kinds, fresh fruit, brownies, cookies, several different kinds of pie, pudding cake, cheese cake, and fudge!

Each guest received a gift of a flashlight as he/she entered the building. After the meal, awards were presented to the staff members of Heartland and to the special volunteers who come frequently to Heartland. The prizes were very nice and included books, flowers, and other wonderful gifts. A grand door prize was awarded to a lucky winner—it was a lawn or porch swing for two. One person, the volunteer of the year, was given a special award.

Special entertainment for the evening was presented by Teal Steel Band. Many of the volunteers had never heard Teal Steel, a group of seventh and eighth graders from Frankfort in West Virginia who play island music on steel drums, all of which were made from old oil drums.
