Hustle & Bustle

The Ladybirds have had a rather busy schedule of late. This is normal for the Christmas Season, of course, as the group is often invited to entertain for various Christmas celebrations in the local area.

One of the first Christmas performances was for the Notables Organ Club. Their Annual Christmas Quarterly Party was held on December 2nd at the Ponderosa Steak House. The Notables had a dinner there and an annual fund raiser – Silent Auction. Their featured entertainment was the Ladybirds Barbershop Harmony Singers. For their program, Betty Twigg, president of the Notables and lead singer in the Ladybirds performed as the announcer for the Ladybirds portion of the show. The group of singers is always smaller if the event is held during the daytime because those Ladybirds who work cannot attend, but we had about eleven singers that day. The show went very well, though Shirley Carson was sick with a nasty cold and couldn’t really perform, though she was present. That was the day she notified the ladies of her health situation (see previous articles).

In the show for the Notables, the ladies sang several new songs for 2008, including Gift Divine with solo verses by Betty Twigg and Jennifer Bennett, Emmanuel, a Christmas Round, and audience participation selection, which involved audience participation, Ring, Ring, Ring (parody of Doo Bee Doo), and two humorous parodies by Margie Mouse and Shirley Carson (I’ll Be Slim for Christmas and Deck the Malls). The quartet Three Katz and a Mouse, with Liz West substituting as tenor, sang Christmas. Other favorites, including Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer, were performed as well.

The chorus sang for the South End Businessmen’s Association at Woodmen of the World on December 9th. They had their annual Christmas Party that night, and they really love the Ladybirds. There were about fourteen singers present that night. Sandy Daughton did the announcing for the show, which began about 7 p.m. The opening song was Up On The Housetop, followed by many Christmas favorites, including The Twelve Days of Christmas, which involves audience participation. This number is one of the annual requests every year, and the guest singers have a ball hamming it up!

This year’s show featured Three Katz & and Mouse, singing Christmas, Margie Mouse and Shirley Carson, singing two parodies of popular Christmas Songs – I’ll Be Slim for Christmas and Deck the Malls, and Jennifer Bennett performing a solo verse of the song Gift Divine (to the tune of How Great Thou Art).
