Picnic Fun At Betty’s0
There were fourteen people who attended the annual summer picnic held at Betty Twigg’s home on September 3, 2009. The event was a potluck dinner and fun for all. People began to arrive around 5 p.m., loaded with goodies for the feast. There were green salads, cole slaw, potato salad, macaroni salad, carrot/raisin salad, fried chicken, meatballs, spaghetti, mini sandwiches, and fruit tray; desserts were very delectable and included heart smart cake, chocolate/peanut butter birthday cake for the Ladybirds, pina colada cake for all the lushes in the crowd, chocolate and peanut butter fudge, donuts, peach/apple/blueberry cobbler, and key lime pie. There could well have been more, but that’s all this writer can recall at this point.

Before the meal, the group sang the blessing; then they dug in and did some serious eating and visiting with one another. Everyone enjoyed the food, and one group of ladies stayed out in the kitchen serving the dessert soon after the main meal. Much fun was had by them as they cut cakes and served pieces to everyone. The pina colada cake hit home and made everyone feel happy, smile a lot and act up—relaxing and having fun. That’s what it’s all about.

Shirley Carson read a funny email that had everyone laughing. The chorus did some singing and tried, unsuccessfully, to invite the deer to the concert. Ellie introduced a tag that goes with the song Sweet Georgia Brown. The group sang through that several times, and then Ellie said, “We’ll have the entire song to try at next week’s rehearsal.” The barbershoppers then sang Heart of My Heart, Take Me Out to the Ball Game, Ain’t a That Good News, Please Don’t Give My Daddy No More Wine, One More Song, and Sing Your Way Home.

We initiated Amy Harman into the Ladybird Barbershop Harmony Singers by discussing the initiation vows, which include such statements as: If I sign up for a gig and cannot make it in the event of illness or other emergency, I will call one of the officers or the director to tell them they will be one voice short or I will attend rehearsals regularly, I will pay my dues by November 15 each year, plus other vows not included here. Amy was presented with her Ladybirds pin and the group sang the Tenor Tag in her honor. Long live the Ladybirds!

The weather was gorgeous outside, and though the group ate indoors, we all adjourned to the patio for singing, fun, and fellowship with one another. At about 8 p.m. people began to pack up and head home, having thoroughly enjoyed an evening at Betty’s. Everyone expressed their thanks for being our hostess and for providing a beautiful setting for the picnic. Amy Harman presented her with a potted plant—a beautiful mum for inviting us to her home. Thanks so much, Betty!

Ellie made several announcements about the Christmas Party reservations having been made for December 10. The menu will be a typical turkey dinner. The time will be 5:30 p.m., and the estimated price will be about $10.00 per person (for a group of 20).
