We participated in the 16th Annual Cumberland Radio Days fundraiser for local charities today, June 12, 2007. Jim Kreiger, Rotary President, contacted Ellie Batchelor regarding the Ladybirds' willingness to be a part of the fundraiser by singing on air for approximately 15 minutes and by answering interview questions for another 15 minutes.

We had only a short while to prepare, but we made the best of our time. Ellie asked Jim West to attend our rehearsal on June 7th, and he very graciously did so. He helped us rehearse seven songs, plus a spare should one be needed. He predicted that we'd do fine, and that we did!

The event raised money through pledges to reduce the debt at the Cumberland YMCA Recreation Center. The Ladybirds solicited pledges in advance of the plunge into the water.

Several of the Ladybirds went out to Rocky Gap the morning of the plunge into the water to register Chris Watson and to submit the funds from the pleges that had been collected for the YMCA. Also, the "plungers" were each given a T-shirt to commemorate the event. In March, the weather was obviously too cold to be going into the water, though every year various groups sponsor such activities as fundraisers. The press was on hand to take pictures, and the State Police were there, as well, with a helicopter in case of an emergency situation.

The Ladybirds got really enthusiastic as they went about shopping for presents to stuff Christmas stockings for The Salvation Army to give to less fortunate children. The idea for this project came from Betty Twigg who went over to The Salvation Army building and picked up stockings for those who volunteered to stuff them. The ladies really enjoyed going shopping together and then pooling some of their "loot" together to distribute the items among the dozen or so stockings that were filled.

The Ladybirds With Their Stockings

The night the stockings were turned in to Betty for delivery to The Salvation Army, the group was performing one of their many Christmas shows. They were all dressed in their festive Christmas tops and wore Santa Hats. Stuffing the stockings brought the Ladybirds as much Christmas joy as they did to the children who received them. Major Sue, of The Salvation Army, was extremely pleased with the number of stockings that so many organizations prepared for Christmas giving, and she said, "You should have seen the eyes and the happy smiles on the children's faces as they received their stockings."

A patriotic show at Constitution Park was very somber as crowds of people came to express their grief over the attack on September 11, 2001 in which thousands of people were killed. Shortly after that tragedy, the Ladybirds performed patriotic songs on a CD called A New America. Everyone was pulling together, praying, singing patriotic songs, and helping the victims and survivors of those who lost their lives in that tragic terrorist attack.
