The Ladybirds held a rehearsal/picnic at Betty Twigg's home in LaVale on Thursday, August 30. One would think we needed a social get-together because the rehearsal portion of this event didn't happen, actually. The picnic did, however, as you can see from the pictures provided by Betty Twigg. After eating heartily, we sang briefly and just enjoyed being together, but singing was not the priority on this evening together. The food and company won out!

What might have resulted in a cancellation of rehearsal on July 24th turned out to be a very pleasant practice session for the Ladybirds. It became apparent when the group arrived at their usual rehearsal place, Park Place United Methodist Church, that the "keeper of the key" was not present and had not given the key to anyone else so that we could get into the building.

As a group we pondered what we might do - try to reach a representative of the church, cancel practice, or sing in the parking lot; about that time, Betty Twigg said, "I could make a suggestion." Then she said, "We could go back to my house and practice there."

Tampa - Standing before a panel of state lawmakers Saturday, high school sophomore T.J. Mouse proposed legislation that would require students to take a driver's education course to graduate.

He has seen too many "stupid teenager mistakes" in his school's parking lat not to care about this issue, he said.

"A lot of guys think they can drive 75 mph and still maintain control of a car," said Mouse, who attends Chamberlain High School. "I've even received text messages from friends who I know were driving, and I messaged them back to put their phones away."

Mouse was among 15 Hillsborough County high school students at the fourth annual Ought To Be A Law student bill drafting competition held at the school district's downtown administration building...

Shirley Carson had her hip replaced on February 19th at Memorial Hospital. She did very well, having had a spinal rather than general anesthesia for the procedure. The hospital personnel had her up and walking the same day as the surgery, and her formal rehabilitation therapy began the next morning. Her friends and family visited her frequently throughout her stay in the hospital, and her brother Bob called her everyday to talk with her during her confinement...

The Ladybirds had a great time practicing for the Valentine's Day performances, though the main program for the chorus was canceled. We understand that we will be rescheduled in the near future, but of course Valentine's will not be in vogue then.

Afternoon Delight met at Shirley Carson's house and called a number of people who had ordered Singing Valentine's Day greetings for their loved ones. The recipients of the calls were delighted with their musical valentine, and it was fun for the Afternoon Delight Quartet to make these people happy!

The Ladybirds met at Betty Twigg's house for their Summer Picnic on Thursday, September 13th. Everyone brought a covered dish, and Betty supplied the place, the drinks, and the paper products for the event. There was food a-plenty, including meatballs, quesadillas, pasta salads, lettuce salad, macaroni, potato salad, cole slaw and lots of sweet stuff, too! For dessert there was: brownies, cookies, fudge, eclair cake, cherry pizza, and more, more, more! As Liz, said, "I won't have to eat for two days!"

Summer is the usual time for church choirs to take a vacation; thus, a number of churches have invited the Ladybirds and other groups to perform special music for their Sunday worship services. This summer has been no exception, and we have provided music for Park Place United Methodist Church and Frostburg United Methodist Church in the last several weeks. We still have on our agenda Central United Methodist Church and Frostburg Presbyterian Church.

The two ladies barbershop groups met at Centerville for a get-together with food and music on June 26th as scheduled. The evening was, by and large, quite successful. We all met at a local park and ride and carpooled to the site. When we got there, though, no one had a key to get into the building and the man who usually would provide the key (and who lives very close by) was not at home. The weather was frightfully HOT! It took over thirty minutes to get yet a different individual to come bring a key so we could get all our foodstuffs inside and have a meal and sing together for awhile.

We of the Ladybirds Barbershop Harmony Singers wish to express our condolences to Betty Twigg on the passing of her mother, Naomi Colosimo, and to call attention to some of the details of this remarkable woman's 99 years of life. She was just three months away from reaching that Century mark!

Betty's mom, referred to hereafter as Naomi, resided at the Beverly Living Center for approximately 5 years, and Betty dutifully went there on a regular basis to visit her, even though for a while now Betty was never really sure her mother knew who Betty was or if she understood what Betty said to her on recent visits. You will want to read about Naomi's life in the obituary, which was published in the Times/News on June 13th. The funeral arrangements were published therein. The Funeral Home where both the viewing and the funeral were held was Durst Funeral Home on Frost Avenue; the viewing was on Thursday afternoon and evening, June 14th, while the funeral ceremony was held the next day, June 15th at 11 a.m. The funeral leaflet is also viewable for your information in the Ladybirds Gallery.
